"KMAN 92.5 is pleased to present the latest offering by Smokey Emery, a.k.a. tape-loop / 4 track maestro Daniel Hipólito.

The album, entitled "Nights like this are why I have no heart," takes its time and creates a sense of open space, with perhaps a limited range of visibility in the prevailing dark. A few repetitions (repetition ≠ same) move toward one another, shifting their shades as they linger, not quite touching in the parabolic evening. An obscured window, a solo swim at midnight, the protracted focus on ripples spreading on the surface of fluorescent water. Music for floating as passing clouds obscure the stars. - KMAN, 8.14.20

"Daniel Hipólito’s tape-loop compositions emulate the sounds of complete silence: The creaking of walls; the blood clicking in your temples; the hum of an interstate a few miles away. To accomplish this, Hipólito, who records as Smokey Emery, combines and reduces layers of field recordings into dense, subtle environments. In particular, the four movements of Nights like this are why I have no heart are like rooms in a house, each designed to trigger sense memories the way a visit to a childhood bedroom might summon waves of nostalgia, or regret, or melancholia – associations personal to you and you alone.
